In the first half of 2024, China's medical device exports stabilized and warmed up after the large fluctuations brought about by the epidemic in previous years, and resumed the normal growth trend. According to customs statistics, in the first half of 2024, China's medical device exports totaled $22.976 billion, an increase of 3.1% year-on-year.
Sub-category disposable consumables increased the most significantly
In the first half of the year, as the largest export subcategory of China's medical devices, the export value of hospital diagnosis and treatment products was 10.395 billion US dollars, a slight increase of 2.5%. Among them, the export value of medical, surgical or veterinary instruments and appliances, not listed steel sanitary appliances, endoscopes, complete sets of nuclear magnetic resonance imaging devices, X-ray tubes and other products increased significantly.
Exports of disposable consumables amounted to $4.881 billion, with the most significant increase among the five subcategories, up 8.6% year-on-year. From the perspective of the relationship between volume and price, the export volume increased by 5.4% year-on-year, and the average export price rose by 3% year-on-year, achieving a double rise in volume and price. In particular, the export vitality of gloves products has been fully restored, and the growth is significant. The 14.5% increase in syringe exports was mainly attributed to the rush behavior of customers before the United States proposed to impose tariffs, which was particularly prominent in exports to the United States.
The export volume of health care and rehabilitation supplies increased by 22.4%, but the average export price fell by 14.7%. Under the combined effect, the total export volume increased by 4.4% year-on-year to 4.763 billion US dollars. Massage appliances as the main export products of this category, accounting for 47.4%, also showed the characteristics of volume increase and price decrease, which reflects the growth of exports of small massage health appliances, but also reflects the intensification of competition in the massage chair export market.
Exports of medical dressings were $1.913 billion, down 9.8% year-on-year, but the decline has narrowed significantly from 2023, especially in June exports achieved the first positive year-on-year growth in 18 months. In the first half of the year, its export volume increased slightly by 2.5%, while the average export price fell by 12% year-on-year, showing that after the impact of the epidemic has subsided, the international market demand for medical dressings has gradually recovered, but competition is still fierce leading to price pressure.
Although oral equipment and materials accounted for a relatively small proportion of medical device exports, exports in the first half of the year still maintained good growth, an increase of 6.8%, exports reached 1.024 billion US dollars.
